Technical inspection:

To ensure your safety on the roads, every vehicle must be technically sound. The technical inspection is the service that checks whether your vehicle complies with all legal requirements. During the inspection, various components are checked, such as the brakes, headlights, chassis and seat belts.

You are responsible for the cost of the inspection. If your vehicle fails the inspection, you will need to resolve the issue and have your vehicle inspected again. The second inspection takes place at the same inspection station as the first.

The frequency of inspections depends on the vehicle and the circumstances. There are two types of inspection:

Periodic inspections take place at fixed intervals. For example, you must have your car inspected annually once it is more than four years old.
Non-periodic inspections do not take place at a fixed interval but under certain circumstances.

For example, you must have your car inspected if you put it back on the road.

You can find more information about technical inspections on the GOCA (Groupement des Entreprises agréées de Contrôle Automobile et du Permis de Conduire) website. The website lists the conditions for each type of vehicle and also provides an overview of all technical inspection centres in Belgium.

Inspection centres are open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Car Pass:

If you buy a used car: always ask for the Car-Pass!

If you purchase a car or van, the seller is legally obliged to provide you with a Car Pass. It does not matter whether the seller is a private individual or a professional. The Car Pass shows the mileage on various dates. The document is valid for two months. If you have not been given a Car Pass, the sale is not valid and, as the buyer, you can demand that it be cancelled and your money refunded.

Check the Car Pass carefully!

The more successive mileage readings are listed on the Car Pass, the better you can judge whether the car’s history is accurate. The mileage should follow a logical progression over time. Does the document show a sudden drop? Perhaps the odometer has been tampered with. Ask the seller the relevant questions before making a final purchase.

Would you like to sell a used vehicle?

In this case, you are required to provide the buyer with a Car-Pass, unless the buyer is a professional in the automotive sector. If you fail to do so, the sale is not valid and the buyer may subsequently claim a refund. Therefore, ensure that the buyer signs a receipt for the Car-Pass.

Where can I obtain a Car Pass?

To the technical inspection! Before selling the car, you must take it for a used car technical inspection. Otherwise, the buyer will not be able to register it. Ask for your Car Pass when you arrive at the technical inspection. The inspector will note your mileage and print the Car Pass. It will cost you 6.70 euros including VAT. If the Car Pass has less than 4 mileage readings, it is completely free. Do you already have a Car Pass that is less than two months old? In that case, there is no need to request a new one.
